Amtrak uses shunting locomotives at its main terminal yards, such as Sunnyside in New York, Washington D.C., Chicago and Los Angeles. Amtrak's range of diesel shunting locomotives includes the venerable "SW1000R". Inspired by the SW9 and SW1200 shunting locomotives built in the 1950s by Electro-Motive, ten of these were salvaged by Amtrak and rebuilt by NRE to become Amtrak's SW1000R range.

The SW1000R, which preserved its EMD-style rear cab design after rebuild, is a nimble, 1,000-horsepower, four-axle (B-B) diesel locomotive ideal for commercial shunting duties. Now you have the chance to operate this veteran diesel on New York's Sunnyside Yard Complex!

Initially developed in the 1960s by the Pennsylvania Railroad and the U.S. Department of Transportation, then built by the Budd Company, Metroliners electric self-propelled units were among the first American vehicles to try their hand in the high-speed rail environment. They were also a model that served as inspiration for the passenger amenities of Amtrak's Amfleet.

Operating on the Northeast Corridor, the Metroliners served for two decades, Amtrak formalizing their entry into service in 1971. Although they ceased all activity as "EAEs", the Metroliners inherited a new lease on life after Amtrak converted 29 of the ex-Metroliners into pilot cars.

The Metroliners have been in service for two decades.

Amtrak's pilot cars served America from coast to coast, but their primary use was on the southern portion of New York City's Northeast Corridor. They are also renowned for their regular assignment to Amtrak's "Keystone" services on the New York - Philadelphia - Harrisburg route. They are the ideal addition to TSW's Northeast Corridor New York route!
