In this game, a war rages in the kingdom of Myrtana, and orc hordes have invaded human territory. So the king needs lots of minerals to forge enough weapons for his army to deal with this threat. Anyone who doesn't obey the law is condemned to serve in the huge penal colony of Khorinis to extract the ore.

The entire area is then encircled by a magical barrier, isolating the penal colony from the outside world. The barrier can be crossed from the outside in - but once inside, no one can escape. The barrier has provoked a revolt, dividing the Colony into three rival factions.
