DR BR 250, the German locomotive

In the 1960s, as freight demand and electrification increased, Deutsche Reichsbahn's existing fleet of freight locomotives had become obsolete. A new electric locomotive was needed. DR was looking for a six-axle locomotive capable of pulling all types of rolling stock with ease, with a lightweight steel frame and ergonomic driver's cab. Thus, construction of the first prototypes of the Co'Co' locomotive, also known as the "E51", began in the early 1970s.

DB BR 155, German reunification

After German reunification in 1994, DR BR 250s were renamed according to the Deutsche Bahn classification system, becoming "DB BR 155s". They then operated on the entire German rail network, pulling freight and passenger trains.
