Bombardier's TRAXX (Transnational Railway Applications with Extreme Flexibility) are modular electric and diesel-electric passenger and freight locomotives, designed to rapidly produce mainline models for a variety of European railroad companies. The first version dates back to 1996.
In July 1998, Adtranz (later acquired by Bombardier) received an order for a further 400 medium-weight freight locomotives: the BR 185. This model was equipped with a dual-voltage system for international operation, and embarked the various European train protection systems, as well as a reduced height to meet international gauges.
The BR 185 was also equipped with a dual-voltage system for international operation.
The BR 185.5 can reach a top speed of 140 km/h and is mainly used as a general-purpose freight locomotive. More than 300 BR 185.5 locomotives have been built and sold to various rail operators, including leasing companies, across Europe.
