For over fifty years, Electro-Motive produced its famous line of "GP" (General Purpose) locomotives, nicknamed "Geeps", which spawned 16,700 vehicles. The GP40-2 was built between 1972 and 1986, and 1,143 vehicles were produced. Thanks to a very popular and reliable V-16 645 series engine, as well as EMD's "Dash-2" technology, it is considered by many to be the best model in EMD's Geeps range.
