The Class 40 "Whistler"

The Class 40 was one of the first mass-produced diesel-electric locomotives for British Railways. A total of 200 "Whistlers" were built by English Electric over a four-year period from 1958. Despite the mixed success of the initial 10 Class 40 prototypes, BR ordered a further 190.

The BR Class 08 "Gronk"

The BR Class 08 is perhaps one of the most ubiquitous locomotives on the British network. From 1952 and for ten years, almost 1,000 models were built for British Railways at Derby, Crewe, Darlington, Doncaster and Horwich. It was the locomotive of reference for tasks of all kinds, and virtually all the shunting required in yards and stations was carried out by a "Gronk" type locomotive.
