The rhythm of This War of Mine is imposed by the cycle of day and night. During the day, you'll have to concentrate your efforts on maintaining your hideout, and at night, choose one of your civilians and send him or her to search one of the locations on offer for something to keep you alive. Make decisions in your soul and conscience: protect all the members of your refuge or sacrifice certain people to prolong your chances of survival.
