The Midland Main Line was built in stages between 1830 and 1860. It originally consisted of three railway lines converging at Tri Junct station in Derby, which later became the Midland Railway. However, it wasn't until 1868 that the Midland Railway offered a direct link to the British capital with the opening of the Bedford - St Pancras line (via Luton). The final straight of what is considered the modern Midland Main Line is a relatively short bypass of Sheffield and dates from 1870.

Today, the Midland Main Line connects London with towns and cities in the heart of England, including Luton, Bedford, Kettering, Leicester, Derby and Chesterfield. Since the closure of its competitor, the Great Central Main Line, in the 1960s, it has been the only major rail link between the Capital and the East Midlands.

This line provides a high volume of long-distance and local transport, with express services offered to passengers and operated by East Midlands Trains, a high volume of freight goods, including intermodal trains and wagons carrying aggregates.
